What Is IP Address Management (IPAM)?
IPAM is the practice of planning, tracking, and documenting which IP ranges are used where, so teams avoid overlaps and run out of space less often.
What IPAM covers
IPAM answers simple but important questions: which ranges are allocated, who owns them, what they're for, and how much room is left. Without it, teams guess — and guesses lead to duplicate addresses and outages.
Moving beyond spreadsheets
Many networks start with a spreadsheet. That works until blocks are split, renamed, or resized and the sheet drifts from reality. A visual planner shows the whole supernet at once, so gaps and overlaps are obvious.
Good IPAM habits
Reserve room for growth, name every allocation clearly, keep related subnets together inside a larger block, and record gateway and FHRP addresses so they're never handed out twice.
