Subnetting, CIDR, and IPAM explained
What is subnetting?
Subnetting splits one IP network into smaller networks. It keeps traffic organized, limits broadcast domains, and makes security rules easier to manage.
What is CIDR notation?
CIDR writes a network as an address plus a prefix length, like 10.150.0.0/16. The prefix says how many bits identify the network; the rest are for hosts.
What is IP address management (IPAM)?
IPAM is the practice of planning, tracking, and documenting which IP ranges are used where, so teams avoid overlaps and run out of space less often.
What is VLAN subnet planning?
Each VLAN usually gets its own subnet. Planning them together makes sure every VLAN has room to grow and fits cleanly inside a larger block.
